If you don’t have GPG installed, use the following command for Debian-based systems: sudo apt-get install gnupg Creating the keypairīefore we can start to encrypt or decrypt our messages, we have to create our keypair (public & private key). Most Linux versions are shipped with GPG installed. Therefore we’ll install GPG, the Gnu Privacy Guard. Key usage when encrypting emails (without signing)įirst of all, we need a program that handles the whole encryption stuff. This process is called signing and verifies that the email was sent from the person with a specific key. Additionally to that, you can include a text in your mail that is encrypted with your private key, which the other person can decrypt with your public key. Whenever you want to send an encrypted email to someone, you use their public key to encrypt it so only that person can read it. In theory, you could use your private key as public key and the public key as private key.

If you encrypt something with the public key, you can decrypt it with the private key, and vice-versa. As soon as anybody has your private key, they can decrypt all encrypted emails that were sent to you. The private key, however, is the one that you should keep yourself and never send to anyone else. The public key, as the name implies, is the key that you can give to the public (for example by sharing on a trusted key-server). This means that you have two encryption-keys that you can use to encrypt or decrypt data: A private key & a public key. Okay, for those that don’t know what PGP is and don’t want to read a long introduction – PGP is a so-called asymmetrical encryption method. Since pretty much all of my friends don’t know how to use PGP, let alone what it even is, I thought I could post a little guide on how to set up PGP and encrypt text with it.
